Bilateral perineal hernia with bladder retroflexion in a 13-year-old intact Jack-Russel Dog: Case report

    Get PDF
A 13-year-old male Jack-Russel was presented to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Sokoto because of a swollen perineum. Physical and laboratory examinations revealed normal parameters, however a bilateral protrusion was noticed at the perineum suggestive of a bilateral perineal hernia. Contrast radiography revealed a hernia sac with intestinal segments on the left, urinary bladder and prostate on the right. Standard obturator muscle transpositional herniorhaphy was successfully performed. Keywords: Bilateral Perineal Hernia, Bladder Retroflexion, Cystic Kidney, Canine

Clinico-pathological pattern of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Ilorin, Nigeria

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is an uncommon tumour in Nigeria but the burden of the disease in terms of morbidity and mortality is very high. The aim of the study was to document the clinic-pathological characteristics of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Ilorin, North central Nigeria. This was a retrospective review of all patients seen in ENT department, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital with the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma between January 1st 1999 and December 31st,2008. The patient's biodata, clinical presentation and histopathological findings are presented. The histopathological diagnosis was in accordance with the 1991WHOclassification. A total of 30 patients with histologically confirmed nasopharyngeal carcinoma seen during the study period accounted for 2% of the total cancers recorded in Ilorin cancer registry. There were 20 males and 10 females with a mean age of 48.7 ± 15.9 years. The commonest presenting complaint was cervical lymphadenopathy in 96.7% of patients followed by epistaxis (66.7%) and hearing loss (66.7%). Identifiable riskfactors included regular intake of ungutted salted smoked fish (76.7%) and tobacco use (23.3%) with some having both risk factors. Histologically, undifferentiated carcinoma was the commonest (70%) followed by welldifferentiated keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (20%) and differentiated nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (10%).Undifferentiated carcinoma was the commonest type of nasopharyngeal carcinoma reported from this study especially among males in the 4th and 5th decades of life. Identifiable risk factors included consumption of ungutted salted smoked fish with tobaccon usage. Early diagnosis with effective referral system and easy access to radiotherapy would improve the survival outcome in patients with the disease

Effects of menotrophin and chorulon on superovulation in Red Sokoto does

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of menotrophin, chorulon and their combinations in superovulation in Red Sokoto does. Fifteen healthy does weighed  between 14 and 25 kg were divided into 3 groups of 5 (n=5) each. All does in the 3 groups were synchronized with CIDR for 14 days. Superovulation was performed as follows: Group 1 were treated with 37.5 IU menotrophin for three days, group 2 were treated with 500IU chorulon for 1 day and group 3 were treated with 18.75 iμ  menotrophin for 3 days and 250IU chorulon for one day. The mean SEM superovulatory response in group 1, 2 and 3 was (2.6 0.92, 3.2 0.58 and 9.4 0.68) respectively. The superovulatory response showed no significant differences between group 1 and 2  however, there were statistically significance differences (p<0.01) between groups 1 and 3 and between 2 and 3. These result showed that the combination of Menotrophin and Chorulon effectively produces multiple ovulations as a result the use this  combination is advocated. Keywords: Chorulon, CIDR, Doe, Menotrophin, Sokoto, Superovulatio

Swelling/ Extraction Test of Carbon Dioxide Injection on Dead Oil Field Structure X for Phase Behavior Study

    Get PDF
At present, most of Indonesia's oil field production has decreased significantly. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the EOR gas injection method that has been proven to improve oil recovery factor especially in sub-tropical countries such as America and Canada whose average reservoir has low temperature at the highest temperature range of 135oF. On the other hand, Indonesia is a country with abundant sources of CO2, especially from the oil and gas industry and the Steam Power Plant (PLTU) with fuel oil/ coal, has not been optimally utilized. In this study we studied the phase behavior of CO2 injection effect on Indonesian oil which has a high average temperature reaching 275oF (135oC). Basically it is known that CO2 is increasingly difficult to mix with oil at higher temperatures. If CO2 is injected below the minimum miscible pressure (MMP) at the reservoir temperature, the oil recovery efficiency will decrease as the miscibility is not achieved. It is expected that the process of oil recovery may occur under conditions between immiscible and miscible processes. The CO2 injection experiments were carried out on X field stock tank oil, which according to the EOR screening results were suitable using CO2 EOR. The experiment was conducted using PERTAMINA’s Visual PVT & Swelling Test equipment on various of CO2 injection and pressure on stock tank oil at 135oC. The experimental results show the swelling of oil on various CO2 injections and pressures but extraction has not been reached yet. This showed that only CO2 is miscible into the oil phase and changes the properties of the oil. The miscibility process of CO2 into the oil phase can decrease the viscosity of the oil, impacting on oil mobility to improve the oil recovery factor. However CO2 is not able to extract the oil into the gas phase due to technical difficulties thus it may not be defined at this point

Massive subgaleal haematoma in a 5 year old child – A case report

    Get PDF
Subgaleal haematoma (SH) is a collection of blood between the bony skull and the loose connective tissue. It is almost a diagnosis confined to the neonatal age group with very few occurring beyond the age. Presentation could be sudden or chronic as deterioration in the cardio pulmonary status, shock, skin changes, airway obstruction and neurological sequealae. While assisted delivery with birth trauma are recognized causal factorsin the neonate, trauma to the head and blood related disorders have been reported to be major causes in older children and adults. Usually, the Small SH resolves spontaneously while the massive ones require active management; often with neuro surgical intervention. It also needs identifying the cause so as to treat and prevent a recurrence. We present a case of massive SH in a 5 year old mentally subnormal child with seizure disorder with a favourable outcome

Comparison of equatorial plasma bubble zonal drifts and neutral winds velocity over Southeast Asia

    Get PDF
The purpose of the presented study is to investigate the zonal drifts of Equatorial Plasma Bubbles (EPB) which applied two different ground-based instruments. Malaysia Real-Time Kinematics GNSS Network (MyRTKnet), consists more than 78 GPS receivers was used to observe EPB along 96° East to 120° East longitudes. Subsequently, zonal drift of EPBs derived from GPS-ROTI is compared with neutral winds velocity from Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI). On 10 April 2013, we founded the maximum drift is about 194.4 m/s at 1430 UT to 1500 UT whereas the minimum drift is 111.1 m/s at 1330 UT to 1400 UT. The results illustrate that temporal variations of EPB zonal drift velocities are consistent with the neutral winds
